New FSSAI Registration Online: Who Needs It, Documents and Process

Last updated: 14 October 2026. Based on the FSSAI (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Amendment Regulations, 2026 and FSSAI's order of 13 March 2026.

Operating a food business in India involves particular food-safety regulations. Home Baker, Grocery Retailer, Restaurant, Cloud Kitchen Operator or Food Manufacturer — every food business needs an FSSAI Registration or FSSAI License depending on the nature of the business, turnover, and category.

Registration, State Licence or Central Licence?

From 1 April 2026, the turnover limits are as follows:

CategoryAnnual turnover
Basic RegistrationUp to ₹1.5 crore
State LicenceAbove ₹1.5 crore and up to ₹50 crore
Central LicenceAbove ₹50 crore

The earlier limits were ₹12 lakh for registration and ₹20 crore for a State Licence, so many businesses that needed a State Licence before can now apply for registration. Turnover is not the only test. Your Kind of Business (KoB), the products you handle and where you operate also matter. For example, importers need a Central Licence whatever their turnover.
